LATERAL OFFICER SALARY + BENEFITS

SALARY

Lateral officers will be credited up to nine (9) years of qualifying service from their current employer for salary and step movements only**. Base salary for the 3 different entry steps are as follows, effective July 1, 2019:
  • 2-3 Years | $5,687 per month ($6,345 w/SOCD*)
  • 4-6 Years | $5,923 per month ($6,581 w/SOCD*)
  • 7-9 Years | $6,152 per month ($6,810 w/SOCD*)
​After accruing credible years of service, MPOs receive automatic step increases as defined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Base salary range up to $98,268 (not including SOCD).​

*SOCD: Standards of Conduct Differential is paid to officers at a rate of $658.67 per month)
**Officers who qualify for Intergovernmental Movements from Maui, Kauai or Hawaii police departments are not capped at 9 years of credible service.

ADDITIONAL PAY MAY INCLUDE

  • Night differential (1800-0600) of .55 cents/hour
  • Overtime: 1.5 times the base hourly rate
  • Meal allowance for overtime work
  • Subsidized vehicle allowance
  • Hazard pay (ex. solo bike: 25% of base pay)
  • Special duty (range of $50 - $85 per hour)​

VACATION / SICK LEAVE / HOLIDAYS

  • 21 days of paid vacation per year (accrued monthly at 14 hours each month)
  • 21 days of paid sick leave per year (accrued monthly at 14 hours each month)
  • Leave days are based on eight (8) hour shifts. Depending on assignments, regular shifts may be nine (9) or ten (10) hours.
  • 13 paid holidays per year (14 in election year)

DEFERRED COMPENSATION

  • Withdrawal of Federal/State taxes from any contributions to this plan is deferred until retirement.

EDUCATIONAL REIMBURSEMENT

  • Higher education reimbursement up to $600 per session/$9,600 per fiscal year of accredited undergraduate college courses, pending availability of funds. Other monetary limits apply for graduate and doctorate courses.

ACCELERATED LATERAL ACADEMY &  FIELD TRAINING + EVALUATION PROGRAM

Lateral officers will be required to successfully complete a 12-week accelerated lateral academy.
Officers are paid full-time city employees while attending the academy, however, the academy is not a live-in facility so officers will need to coordinate housing prior to first day of employment.

After passing the accelerated lateral academy, officers will be required to complete a 9-week Field Training and Evaluation Program.

Newly hired lateral officers will service a 1-year initial probationary period.

WORK SCHEDULE/PATROL SHIFTS

During the accelerated lateral academy, officers will mostly work a 5-8 schedule, Monday - Friday, from 0630-1515 hours.

During the Field Training and Evaluation Program (FTEP), officers will work a 4-10 schedule with rotating days off.

Upon successful completion of FTEP, patrol officers work a 5-9 schedule (five 9-hour shifts) with 3 days off every other week. Days off rotate based on the assigned schedule. Patrol consists of 3 different shifts/watches:
  • 1st Watch | 2200 - 0700 hours
  • 2nd Watch | 0600 - 1500 hours
  • 3rd Watch | 1400 - 2300 hours

MEDICAL/DENTAL COVERAGE

City-subsidized medical, prescription drug, dental, and vision plans with option to pay premiums from pre-tax earnings.

RETIREMENT

Only years of service worked with the City & County of Honolulu apply towards retirement**:
  • Normal Retirement
    • ​Age 60 w/10 years of service
  • Early Retirement (Age Penalty*)
    • Age 55 w/25 years of service
  • Multiplier of 2.25%
  • Vesting at 10 years of service

* If you have a minimum of 25 years of credited service in this category you may retire without an age penalty, subject to certain provisions and limitations.
**Does not apply to active members of the Hawaii State Employee Retirement System.
