about the police services officer program
​Formerly known as the cadet program

LIMITED TERM, BUT MAY BECOME PERMANENT


ABOUT:
  • ​The Police Services Officer (PSO) positions represent transitory and interim employment for individuals who are interested in pursuing law enforcement as a career, but who do not yet meet all of the requirements for appointment to regular Metropolitan Police Recruit Positions.
​
  • Individuals selected as Police Services Officer must therefore have the capability to become regular Metropolitan Police Recruits upon meeting the eligibility requirements for such appointment.

​​DUTIES:
  • The PSO receives training in, and performs a variety of non-hazardous field and routine administrative work in support of, or auxiliary to, police functions in preparation for a career in law enforcement; and performs other related duties as required.
​CHARACTERISTICS:
  • The PSO program provides an apprenticeship framework designed to provide training and practical work experience in a variety of different law enforcement assignments that assist in preparing participants for potential appointment to regular Metropolitan Police Recruit positions.
​
  • PSO receive orientation and basic training in the principles, practices, procedures, and techniques of police work, rotate among different departmental divisions and areas of police work, and perform a variety of non-hazardous tasks that support police functions and develop knowledge of the basic functions, operations, and organization of a police department. ​
​MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY:
  • Working alongside Officers doing their day to day duties in different divisions.

FRIDAY
  • Academic curriculum and functional or physical training at the HPD Training Academy

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

The following examples of work are generally stated and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class.

​The omission of specific duties/statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position and consistent with the class concept.
 

  • Community Affairs Division
    • ​Screening inquiries and complaints from the public
    • Assist maintaining equipment and ordering supplies
    • Assist set up/breakdown at community events
    • Maintain, inventory, and sanitize equipment
    • Assist with promotions, ceremonies, funeral ceremonies and memorial events
  • District Community Policing Teams
    • Schedule speaker requests and community events
    • Attending, planning and coordinating community events
    • Analyze and research crime trends/statistics, community questions/complaints
    • Organizing logs/reports/calendars
  • Information Technology Division
    • Work with technicians answering trouble calls in the field and basic setups in the office
    • Familiarize with the MDC computer hardware and software programs used by Officers and the HPD
  • Major Events Division
    • Screening inquiries and complaints from the public
    • Direct calls from different government agencies and the public to the appropriate detail
    • Support to federal, state and/or city entities with any large scale event, natural disasters, or any events coordinated with the MED
    • Assist with the acquisition, retrieval, distribution, maintenance and record keeping of personnel protective equipment and general equipment. 
  • Training Division
    • Make notifications, documentation and submission of necessary forms
    • Assist the Training Division staff with scheuduling tasks
    • Assist with the maintenance, issuance, and storage of POST equipment and assist in the scenarios
    • Maintain the EVOC courses and assist in the EVOC training
    • Play acting roles in Field Exercises.
