SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION SECTION:
FORENSIC SCIENCE INTERNSHIP
The Honolulu Police Department's Scientific Investigation Section (SIS) is pleased to offer a new, accelerated 3-week training program designed to introduce students to the fast-paced world of contemporary scientific testing in criminal investigations. This intensive program is designed to serve as a forensic crime laboratory "boot-camp", providing hands-on training and experience working with industry standard scientific equipment and the real-world methods and procedures used in crime laboratories today. Participants will be given the exclusive opportunity to complete activities and mock case scenarios in several of the HPD: SIS's specialty areas, including the Forensic Biology, Latent Print, and Drug Unit Laboratories.
Program Duration:
July 1 - 24, 2024: 40 hours of self-paced, virtual assignments
July 29 - August 2, 2024 (7:45 AM to 4:30 PM): 40 hours of on-site activities in the laboratory
August 5 - 9, 2024 (7:45 AM to 4:30 PM): 40 hours of on-site activities in the laboratory
Objectives:
- To provide students with an understanding of the day-to-day operations of a professional forensic science laboratory.
- To allow students to apply learned theoretical concepts to practical situations.
- To develop professional skills necessary for a career in forensic science.
- To foster mentorship relationships between interns and experienced forensic scientists.
Interns will be under the close supervision of experienced laboratory scientists, complete a rigorous and accelerated training program in general criminalistics.
*The S. I. S. Internship Program is currently offered only during the Summer.
