Police Radio Dispatcher I (PRD-I)
Training
Initial training for a PRD-I can last for one year, consisting of classwork and closely supervised on-the-job training.
The training is conducted at the Communications Division (Police Headquarters), Ke Kula Maka'i (Police Academy), and the Kapolei Police Station.
Some of the desired abilities include:
- The ability to multi-task is extremely important. A Police Radio Dispatcher will have to be able to type information into the computer, while addressing the assigned police units. The Dispatcher must also be alert to incoming information.
- Typing is a must, not only with alphabets, but all numbers. Knowledge of basic computer skills will also be an advantage.
- Good speaking skills, including proper volume and enunciation.
- Familiarity with the island, such as geographical areas, landmarks, and major areas of interest.
- Familiarity with the major highways and roadways of the island, and the ability to pronounce them.
- Strong memory skills are an advantage.
- The ability to think quickly and decisively in stressful emergency situations, while directing and responding to officers on the radio.
