How long is training?
One year. It consists of on-the-job training, which includes classroom and hands-on work. The training is conducted at the Communications Division, Ke Kula Maka'i (Police Academy), and the Kapolei Police Station. You must provide your own transportation.
What are important skills needed for the job?
The ability to multi-task is extremely important. A Police Radio Dispatcher will have to be able to type information into the computer, while addressing the assigned police units.
The Dispatcher must also be alert to incoming information.
Typing is a must, not only with alphabets, but all numbers.
Knowledge of basic computer skills will also be an advantage.
Good speaking skills, including proper volume and enunciation.
Familiarity with the island, such as geographical areas, landmarks, and major areas of interest.
Familiarity with the major highways and roadways of the island, and the ability to pronounce them.
Strong memory skills are an advantage.
The ability to think quickly and decisively in stressful emergency situations, while directing and responding to officers on the radio.
What are the work hours?
There are three permanent shifts: Day, Swing, and Night. While in training, hours are primarily Day, with Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays off. Once assigned to a watch, or shift, the days off will rotate.Overtime is available, and may be mandated when mapower is low. Normally, there are about 30 Dispatchers to a shift.
What is the Supervisory structure?
Dispatchers are supervised by civilian Supervising Police Radio Dispatchers (SPRD). The watch, or shift, is supervised by a Police Lieutenant. The Communications Division is headed by a Major and a Captain.
What are the benefits?

Can I work another job while employed as a Dispatcher?
Yes, just as long as it is approved by the Chief of Police. Certain jobs are not allowed if it will tarnish the Department's image. While in training, another job is not recommended.
Can I continue my schooling while employed as a Dispatcher?
Yes, but it is not recommended during training. In some cases, partial reimbursement for educational expenses may be available.
What is the dress code?
Casual dress, such as tee shirts, polo shirts, slacks, and jeans are fine. No tank tops allowed.
Is there parking?
Parking will be at the Neal Blaisdell Center when first hired. There will be a monthly fee. Parking at the Police Station is available according to seniority-based wait list. Parking during off- hours (evenings) is available.
Does the Department provide childcare?
No, but the City does have a daycare center near the Police Station. This daycare center is open during day hours only.
How often is payday?
Bi-monthly.
What are some reasons that someone fails in training?
Inability to deal with the real life stresses of the position that comes with handling 911 emergency calls. Inability to adequately and safely handle the radio console by themself. Problems with multi-tasking, such as inadequate typing / computer skills.
Who does the HPD Dispatch?
Police officers for the island of Oahu only. The island is divided into 8 Districts. Each District is controlled by one Police Radio Dispatcher. Dispatchers rotate radios on a regular basis.
Will I have to go to court?
It is possible. If are involved in a major case, such as homicides, bank robberies, etc., you may be subpoenaed to appear in court to testify on your actions as a Dispatcher.

At this time, the process takes approximately 6 months.
Is there opportunity for advancement?
Yes. From an initial position as a PRD-I, you will advance to a PRD-II. Opportunities for promotion to a SPRD (Supervising Police Radio Dispatcher) after interview process.
