Career Opportunities
Officers begin their careers in patrol and over time, as their skills and knowledge develop, the opportunity to work in other assignments may become available.
Specialized assignments are popular and there is strong competition for them. Some of these positions may require higher standards of physical fitness or additional training.
A few of the areas and positions that are frequently requested:
Traffic Division
- The Solo Motorcycle Detail is tasked with facilitating normal traffic flow, especially during peak morning and afternoon hours. The motorcycle officers also perform escort duty for parades and visiting dignitaries. They also participate in community events such as the "Say Hi" school program.

- The Junior Police Officer Detail (JPO) and traffic monitors provide traffic safety assistance for students traveling to and from our elementary schools. The JPO program has been active for 80 years and is the only student traffic assistance program in the nation. The Junior Police Officers provided traffic safety assistance at 120 Oahu schools during the school year.
- Vehicular Homicide Detail investigates motor vehicle collisions involving death, critical injury, and felony traffic crimes.
Narcotics / Vice Division
- Investigating, disrupting and dismantling organized criminal enterprises that perpetuate drug trafficking, gambling and prostitution.
Criminal Investigations Division
- The Criminal Investigation Division (CID) consists of nine details which investigate cases involving murder, robbery, assault, sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse, financial fraud and forgery, auto theft, and white collar crimes.
Specialized Services Division
- The Special Weapons and Tactics Teams (SWAT) primary function is to handle dangerous situations, such as hostage, sniper, and barricaded suspect incidents.
