Complete your application online with the City & County Department of Human Resources (DHR) at www.honolulu.gov/hr. If there is currently no open recruitment for the position, you can submit a Job Interest Card here to be notified when a position in the "Law Enforcement" category becomes available.
2. ENTRY LEVEL POLICE EXAMINATION
Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be notified by DHR via email to self-schedule for the written test. The written test is a timed, multiple choice exam that covers observation and memory, written communication/report writing, reading and understanding written information, and reasoning/analytical ability. DHR will notify applicants of their written test results. Applicants who pass the written test will be ranked by their score and placed on an eligibility list for one year.
Please do not contact HPD regarding the Entry Level Police Examination.
HPD will process applicants to fill vacancies as they occur, starting with the highest ranking applicants. Be sure that DHR has your current contact information.
3. ORIENTATION/PRE-OFFER SUITABILITY SCREENING
Selected applicants will be scheduled to attend an orientation and take a written exam. At the orientation, the Recruitment Unit will discuss the different steps of the selection process and the instructions for completing a Personal History Statement (PHS).
4. ONLINE PHS
Applicants will have 10 days to complete their online PHS. It is recommended that applicants gather information on previous employers, landlords and references before attending orientation.
5. CLARIFICATION INTERVIEW
Applicants will be scheduled to meet with an investigator for a clarification interview. During this interview, the responses to the PHS will be reviewed in detail. Additionally, traffic abstract, criminal history, and education history will be discussed. Background checks will be conducted throughout the entire selection process.
6. PHYSICAL READINESS ASSESSMENT
Applicants will be required to attend and pass the Physical Readiness Assessment (PRA). The PRA is a pass/fail test. All events must be passed in order to advance in the selection process.
Agility Run - 21.6 seconds
Bench Press - 68% of body weight
300-Meter Run - 82.8 seconds
Push Ups - 24 in 2 minutes
Sit Ups - 24 in 1 minute
1.5-Mile Run - 21 minutes
Please note that this is a "Physical Readiness Assessment." The minimum requirements to graduate from the Police Academy are higher.
7. CONDITIONAL OFFER OF EMPLOYMENT
Selected applicants who pass the strict standards of HPD will be given a conditional offer of employment.
8. PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAM
Applicants will be scheduled to take a written Psychological exam.
9. PSYCHOLOGICAL INTERVIEW
Applicants will be scheduled for an interview with a licensed psychologist.
10. TRUTH VERIFICATION
Applicants will be scheduled to take a polygraph exam.
11. MEDICAL EXAM
Applicants will be scheduled to take a medical exam conducted by the City's Health Services Department. Questions about the medical requirements should be directed to Health Services at (808) 768-8590.
